2018 Inquiries

For 2018 I have two inquiry topics I am focussing on. The first with my Year 11 students I am aiming to improve the success rate of my NCEA Level 1 class by encouraging more working in groups and submitting group responses to assessments. and the second with my small class of Year 13 students.

I am intending to open up the Year 13 programme so they can choose the topic they wish to research and the medium in which they develop their digital response. For example two boys are in a Young Enterprise team and they successfully dipped their toes in the water of Start-Up Enterprise and wish to continue with their company in 2018. Their decision is to find a technological product that they can develop for both their Year 13 Digital course and their Year 13 YES course.

To support me in the development of my teaching practice I use 5 main areas:
Colleguial discussions, both in my department, within school staff and within my Digital Technologies subject specialists.

Twitter, has a group of inspiring teachers who regularly post, for example Rachael Chisnall (ipossum) who is a Microsoft Innovative Expert.  Dave Roberts (Mr Roberts) is an inspiring researcher and provides up-to-date reading material on current topics.
NZACDITT recently rebranded to DattA has a forum that is very active and has lots of discussions on it.  Generally I am a lurker but I do become brave and comment occasionally.

For the past 5 years I have travelled to either Wellington or Christchurch to get up to speed with the latest innovations for Digital Technologies. The networking at these events is always critically important and I always enjoy these interactions and come away with the feeling: ‘I’m okay’, and I am providing my students with the best I can.

The competence that these communities have established over time and my experience as an ongoing member of the community Knox (2009) have supported me in my need to quickly upskill in the rapid developments of Digital Technologies, and the expertise of those in the community allow me to short circuit knowledge development or achieve learning outcomes for my students far higher than I consider possible.  This is demonstrated by some of the animations my Year 13 students develop.

With my Year 11 class in 2018 I will be using my community to support the development of my gamification of my course and improving the functioning of the groups my students will be in.

My goal is to find better academic performance with my Year 11 and 13s than I had in 2017.
